Abstract

This descriptive study was done to identify the factors that effect on job adaptation of new nurses during their first two years, and to give suggestions for the better nursing practice education.
For the study, 20 of head nurses and new nurses were interviewed and a semistructured questionnaire was developed and used for survey.
The questionnaire was consisted of general characteristics and the level of adaptations in nursing skills, knowledge and attitudes, working conditions(environment), relationship with personnel. The level of adaptation was measured by 4 point Likert Scale. Data from 115(63 of head nurses and 52 of new nurses) was analysed by SPSS.

The results were as follows :
1. Head nurses recognised new nurses' adaptation level as higher than 2.5 in all four areas. The adaptation level recognised by new nurses is lower than 2.5 in the area of knowledge and attitudes, and working conditions (environment).
2. Head nurses expected nursing college to consider communication, systematic clinical practice, responding to emergency situation, whereas new nurses did systematic clinical practice, communication, responding to emergency situation, terminology, nursing skill, in its order.
On the basis of the results, researchers suggest as follows :
1. The contents of clinical practice should be modified considering the new trend.
2. For good relationship between nurses, a training course for human relation should be involved in curriculum.
3. The college should lessen the gap between lecture and clinical practice through fostering collaboration and exchanging informations with hospitals, inviting part-time instructors from hospital, refreshment of faculty members at hospital site.
